She tells about Virgil arriving and what an intelligent teacher he is. She enclosed a poem by a friend on the disarmament movement and she would like Mr. M. to critique it. Mr. Bland has already. Enclosed circular showing how his name was used. They have a copy of his The Real America.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901). He became a well-known reader of his own poems and lecturer of idealistic views, but his creative output for remainder of life ...
